The Orthoceras was a cephalopod more than 300 million years ago. Its name means “straight horn”, referring to its impressively long and cone-shaped shell, and is best known for its conical shape.
The shell of the Orthoceras serves as a home for the straight horn. Its soft body lived at the end of the last open part and was protected by the evolving shell.
The cephalopod with a straight shell differs from many other species of this type of mollusk. The mouth is surrounded by about ten long wrists, and the ventral surface of the wrists has many small suckers. Once the small animals touch it, the small animals are sucked and swallowed.
